Nginx vs Apache: Which Web Server Should You Use on Linux?

nginx vs apache - custom-ngxa-featured.png

Nginx and Apache httpd both serve HTTP and HTTPS traffic on Linux. The debate is not which is “faster” in the abstract — it is which fits your
concurrency model, your application (WordPress, custom API, Java behind a proxy), and whether you rely on .htaccess per directory.

For hands-on setup, see our Nginx reverse proxy guide and
Nginx hardening. Many production stacks use Nginx at the edge even when an app server sits behind it.

Architecture at a Glance

Nginx uses an event-driven worker model that handles many idle connections efficiently. Apache offers multiple MPMs (prefork, worker, event) and a deep module ecosystem including per-directory overrides.

Concurrency and Static Content

Both serve static files well when tuned. Nginx became popular as a front proxy for slow clients; Apache event MPM closed much of the gap for plain HTTP serving.

NoteBenchmark your own workload — micro-benchmarks rarely match real WordPress or API traffic.

Configuration Philosophy

Nginx prefers explicit server blocks (often under sites-enabled). Apache VirtualHost files are equally capable; shared hosts love .htaccess because users can override without root.

Need per-user .htaccess on shared hosting? Apache (or a panel that emulates it).
Want strict, reviewed config in Git? Nginx (or Apache without AllowOverride).

PHP and Application Runtimes

Modern PHP deployments use PHP-FPM behind either server. mod_php inside Apache is simpler but couples PHP lifecycle to Apache workers.

not mod_php by default

Reverse Proxy and TLS

Both terminate TLS and proxy to upstreams. Nginx is the more common public edge in microservice diagrams; Apache mod_proxy is fully capable for internal hops.

When to Choose Which

Pick Nginx for high-concurrency APIs, static+proxy combos, and Kubernetes ingress-style patterns. Pick Apache when modules, .htaccess, or legacy hosting workflows dominate.

Migrating Between Them

Map vhosts one by one, test with nginx -t or apachectl configtest, and reload instead of restart when possible.

bashconfig test
sudo nginx -t
sudo apachectl configtest

Quick Reference

Nginx Apache
Strength Proxy, static, many idle connections Modules, .htaccess, broad docs
PHP (modern) php-fpm + fastcgi php-fpm (preferred) or mod_php
Per-dir overrides No .htaccess equivalent .htaccess supported
Typical edge role Very common CDN/origin Common on traditional shared hosting
